Introduction to Public Health and Epidemiology: 3 Credits

This course will utilize an intensive 2-week hybrid module combining classroom lectures, seminar discussions, and field learning experiences to deliver an undergraduate introduction to the foundational concepts of public health and epidemiology with a particular focus on the applications of social justice and reconciliation in the US urban context. The course begins with a summary of the foundational nomenclature, definitions, and principles of population-based disease prevention, transmission, and treatment. Field learning experiences, course materials, and guest lecturers allow students from a diversity of academic majors to learn, analyze, and apply public health principles. The course includes field learning experiences in Baltimore, MD and Washington D.C. and learning applications from case studies of acute and chronic infectious diseases and case studies highlighting social, structural, and political determinants of health. Field learning intentionally facilitates learn from faith-based, public, private, federal, and international organizations doing public health, social justice, and reconciliation work.
